OMAHA, Neb. — Anova Biosciences, a long-time research company in the areas of applied biotechnology has announced an innovative new COVID-19 testing tool in the fight against the coronavirus.
Using just a drop of blood, the Early Viral Assessment (EVA) can be used in health care settings, and can also be done at home, work or school. Results are accurate and available in only five minutes.
For over 20 years Anova Biosciences has successfully used EVA to reliably pinpoint the early onset of infections in both humans and animals. This new application puts that science to work in detecting the body’s response to the presence of COVID-19.
How Our COVID-19 Test Works
After an individual has been infected with a virus, the body produces specific proteins called acute phase proteins. These are key components in how the body’s innate immunity works, signaling the presence of an infection.
“EVA is a fast, accurate diagnostic test that ‘sees’ the triggering of the natural innate immunological response,” said Dr. William Julien, CEO of Anova. “Using a small amount of blood, EVA measures the concentration of two types of these acute phase proteins, known in science as Alarmins and Defensins.”
Why Our COVID 19 Testing Is The Best
Current COVID-19 tests can only identify the virus well after it’s taken hold — five or six days from the time of infection. Performed too early, as many as 70% of these tests result in a false positive or false negative outcome.
“EVA catches the virus much earlier,” said Julien. “It identifies its presence by measuring the body’s natural immunological response. If a person has been infected, the Alarmins and Defensins it monitors, are produced within six hours, letting a person know if they have the virus days before any other methods.”
Why Use An Early Viral Assessment (EVA)
In a series of clinical studies conducted at a leading national university medical center, EVA was 100% accurate in identifying COVID-19 infections. Similar results were reported in studies conducted in Europe.
EVA works by collecting a small amount of blood using a lancet, similar to what’s commonly used in diabetes management. The blood is collected in a tube, applied to the EVA test strip, and a few drops of a reagent is added to the strip.
How Soon Will I See My COVID-19 Test Results?
Results appear in five minutes or less. Three lines indicate no infection is detected. Two lines indicate something is going on in the body. One line indicates a high elevation of Defensins, signaling an infection. If one or two lines appear, the next step is to contact a physician.
Anova Biosciences has submitted an application for EVA to have an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) granted by the Federal Drug Administration. The EUA requires a review of EVA and subsequent approval for use by FDA scientists. Once issued, Anova Biosciences will announce how and where EVA can be purchased.
